Even if you don’t plan to dine at one of the fancy restaurants, Nemacolin is worth the visit. There is a pub for a more casual dining experience with a super cool gigantic fish tank. Falls City Restaurant and Pub is the heart of Ohiopyle. This is where it happens! Located at the north entrance to town (just off Rt 381 on Garrett St) and down the street from the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail’s terminus, the pub is easy to access and always a fun time. In 1953, Bernardine and I.N. Hagan purchased eighty acres in the mountains above Uniontown in Western Pennsylvania where their families had lived for generations. After falling in love with the home of their friends the Kaufmanns, Fallingwater, they telephoned Frank Lloyd Wright and asked if he would design a house for them. His answer was: “Of course. Come on out.”
At eighty-six, and hard at work on the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Beth Shalom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, and about twelve residential homes, Wright said he could “shake it (Kentuck Knob) out of his sleeve at will” never even setting foot on the site, except for a short visit during the construction phase. This would be one of the last homes completed by Wright.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm Wade Zinter offers a by donation 90 minute vinyasa style yoga class. Class is held in the Ohiopyle Community Center at 15 Sherman Street in Ohiopyle. Loose, comfortable clothing and a mat are all that you need. There are also mats available to use. Keep in mind that class is always different, but can be quite rigorous depending on your fitness level, so you may want to pace yourself, however, don’t let that keep you away. Wade is extremely helpful and accommodating and is always offering less challenging poses throughout the class.
